Fixed-Term Employment in Austria

Overview

This section provides information for individuals planning to work in Austria for a fixed period of time, as well as for employers hiring out or posting workers to Austria.

There are five categories of fixed-term employment in Austria:

  1. Seasonal Workers – Workers employed in tourism, agriculture, and forestry on a seasonal basis.
  2. Posting of Workers – Workers sent to Austria by foreign employers to fulfil a contract-based assignment.
  3. Transnational Hiring Out of Workers – Employees temporarily leased to Austrian companies by foreign employers.
  4. Intra-Corporate Transfer (ICT) – Managers, specialists, or trainee employees transferred to an Austrian branch of their company or corporate group.
  5. Project Staff – Workers employed exclusively for a specific project for its duration.

Processing Time

  • Employment permit processing: 4–6 weeks.
  • Visa/residence permit processing: 10–12 weeks (depending on workload and verification requirements).

Documents Required

General Documents (All Fixed-Term Employment Types)

  • Valid passport (issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 90 days beyond departure).
  • Recent passport-sized photo (45x35mm, taken within the last six months).
  • Proof of health insurance (compulsory or equivalent private policy covering Austria).
  • Proof of financial means (e.g. employment contract, payslips, pension records, investment statements).

Additional Documents for Specific Employment Categories

Seasonal Workers

  • Employment contract with employer in Austria.
  • AMS employment permit.
  • Proof of accommodation provided by employer.

Posted Workers (Non-EEA Companies)

  • Posting permit or employment permit from AMS.
  • Contract between Austrian and foreign employer.

Hired-Out Workers (Non-EEA Companies)

  • Hiring out permit from trade authority (Gewerbebehörde).
  • Employment permit from AMS.

Project Staff

  • Project-specific employment contract.
  • Evidence of project duration and necessity of temporary employment.

PLEASE NOTE:

All documents must be presented in original and copy. If not in German or English, a certified translation may be required.

Photo Specifications

  • Recent, colour passport-sized photograph.
  • White or light background, no shadows.
  • Neutral expression, no smiling.
  • No sunglasses, hats, or head coverings, except for religious purposes.
  • Must be glued to the visa application form.

If the submitted photograph does not meet these requirements, the visa application will be considered incomplete, and the applicant will be required to submit a new photo.
