EU Blue Card Visa – Austria

Overview

The EU Blue Card is a residence permit for highly skilled third-country nationals who wish to live and work in Austria. It provides access to the Austrian labor market while offering a pathway to permanent residency.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Educational Qualification
    • Hold a university degree (minimum 3 years of study) OR
    • For ICT professionals & service managersat least 3 years of relevant work experience (obtained within the past 7 years) may be accepted as an alternative to a university degree.
  • Employment Offer
    • Must have a binding job offer from an Austrian employer for at least 6 months.
    • The job must match the applicant’s education or work experience.
  • Salary Requirement
    • The minimum annual gross salary must be at least €51,500 in 2025 (including special payments).
  • Labour Market Test (Arbeitsmarktprüfung)
    • The Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS) must confirm that no equally qualified Austrian or EU citizen is available for the job.

Special Cases

  • Individuals entitled to asylum or subsidiary protection in Austria can also apply for the EU Blue Card.
  • No points system is used for EU Blue Card applicants.

Processing Time

  • Standard processing time: 10 working days.
  • May take longer due to additional scrutiny, interviews, or peak application periods.
  • Applicants should apply at least two weeks before their planned travel date.

Documents Required

All documents must be recent (not older than 10 days) and presented in original and photocopy format.

General Documents

  • Completed application form.
  • Valid passport (issued within the last 10 years, with at least 90 days validity beyond intended stay).
  • Recent passport-size photo (dimensions 45x35mm, taken within the last 6 months).
  • Health insurance covering all medical risks in Austria.
  • Proof of accommodation in Austria (rental agreement, property deed).
  • Proof of financial means (latest 3 months’ bank statements showing a positive balance).

Employment-Related Documents

  • Employer’s declaration (in compliance with the Act Governing the Employment of Foreign Nationals).
  • Proof of job offer (employment contract for at least 6 months).
  • Salary confirmation showing minimum required earnings (€51,500 for 2025).
  • Labour Market Test (Arbeitsmarktprüfung) approval from the Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS).
  • Proof of professional entitlement (if applying for a regulated profession in Austria).

Educational & Work Experience Documents

  • University degree certificate (minimum 3 years of study).
  • Proof of institution status (degree recognition from an accredited university).
  • Alternative for ICT professionals:
    • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience within the past 7 years.
    • Work experience certificates & employer testimonials.

Additional Documents (If Applicable)

  • Marriage certificate (if applying with a spouse).
  • Divorce certificate (if previously married).
  • Certificate of registered partnership.
  • Proof of family relationship (birth/adoption certificates).
  • Death certificate of spouse (if applicable).
  • Extract from police records (or a certificate of good standing, required for first-time applicants).

Important Notes

  • All documents must be submitted in original and copy format.
  • If documents are not in German or Englishofficial translations must be provided.
  • Legalized versions of documents may be required in some cases.

Photo Specifications

  • Recent, colour passport-sized photograph.
  • White or light background, no shadows.
  • Neutral expression, no smiling.
  • No sunglasses, hats, or head coverings, except for religious purposes.
  • Must be glued to the visa application form.

If the submitted photograph does not meet these requirements, the visa application will be considered incomplete, and the applicant will be required to submit a new photo.
