EU Mobility Visa – Austria

Hassle-free visa processing for your travel needs.

Overview

The Austria EU Mobility Visa applies to EEA citizens, Swiss nationals, and their family members who wish to reside in Austria for more than three months. Under EU law, individuals may move freely within the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and Austria, subject to meeting specific conditions.

For non-EEA family members, a residence card (“Aufenthaltskarte”) is required, which can later be upgraded to a permanent residence card (“Daueraufenthaltskarte”) after five years of continuous lawful residence.

Eligibility

EEA & Swiss Nationals

EEA citizens and Swiss nationals do not require a visa to enter Austria. They may stay for up to three monthswithout restrictions. To reside beyond three months, they must meet one of the following conditions:

  • Employment: Be employed or self-employed in Austria.
  • Financial Stability: Have sufficient means to support themselves and their dependents, along with valid health insurance.
  • Studies: Be enrolled in an Austrian school or recognised educational institution with financial stability and health insurance.

Family Members of EEA & Swiss Nationals

Family members of EEA, Swiss, or Austrian citizens (who have exercised their EU mobility rights) may apply for residence in Austria under specific conditions:

  • Spouse or registered partner.
  • Children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren (under 21 years old or dependent).
  • Parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents (if financially dependent).
  • Life partners in a proven long-term relationship.
  • Other dependent relatives who have lived in the same household or require care due to serious health conditions.

Right to Residence & Registration

Individuals meeting the residence requirements must apply for an EU Registration Certificate (“Anmeldebescheinigung”) within four months of arrival in Austria.

After five years of lawful residence, EEA and Swiss citizens can apply for a Long-Term Residence Certificate (“Bescheinigung des Daueraufenthalts”). A Photo ID for EEA Citizens can also be issued, serving as an identity document.
